The Shuffle Style

Introduction:

The shuffle shot put style, created by Ashton Eaton. A former world record holder in decathlon, where one of the events is shot put. It was created since Eaton could not master glide and is therefore together with his coach created a new version of the well known style. It is not a very common style, being overseen by glide and rotational shot put styles. I have personally never done this style. However, when Eaton started doing the style it raise many eyebrows and was see as something unknown. It is a great stye to learn if you have certain restrictions such as not being able to put as much pressure on one knee etc. or for someone doing dec/heptathlon, not having time enough to learn glide. For more background info check out Ashton Eaton's own video explaining and showing the style; Click Here!

Step by step:

(written for a right-handed person, otherwise switch right for left and vice versa.)

  1. Go to the rear of the throwing circle, having back towards the landing sector.
  2. Stand with feet shoulder width apart.
  3. Place shot in your right-hand, wherever you personally find to get the most power from and push it close to the neck, with the elbow faced up. It would be an illegal put if the shot left the neck before the final put.
  4. Place the left-arm straight out and a 90° from the body.
  5. Then bend your knee about having an angle of 95° being almost at a right angle ensuring your getting power all the way from the legs to the arm in the release. Also leaning forwards in this position.
  6. To actually start the put here, you start by moving your right foot to the centre of the circle in a step like motion backwards. staying very balanced through out and still facing the back of the ring.
  7. Next, you take your left foot and move it to so that it goes at a right angle from the stoppingboard though next to it (picture). This would be your beginning of the release stage.
  8. Here you then do a standard glide release:

  9. The position you should be in now is; having your right foot in the centre of the circle and left foot right next to the stopboard, however with all your weight still on your right leg which should be bent still, while your left leg is straight.
  10. Then as soon as your left foot is in the ground start the release. Which starts by starting to push the shot put away from the body towards the landing sector. This is when your weight will start to shift and be more on the left leg.
  11. Then Ashton Eaton decides to end his with a leg-swap:

  12. Then what you want to do is focus all energy on having the shot slightly above you as you release it and as the shot is about to leave your right hand and you flick your wrist to give it an extra push, you switch legs also placing your right foot right by the stopboard. Therefore also stopping the bodies rotation.

Drills:

  • To practise, I would also recommend practising the release over and over again, to really understand in what order everything should be happening. From step 8 and onwards. Since this is the most crucial part of this style and in the video of Eaton practising this this style you can see him do this many times over.
  • I would also recommend practising these steps backwards over and over, since it takes a bit getting used to and completing these with good balance. Even if this style is great since it allows you to easily stay balanced, however, if you are not used to it it will be just as hard as any other.
